The 2020 Election is coming up soon, and naturally this phrase brings up quite a variety of emotions. Some are dreading the inevitable controversy, drama, and heated debates while others are looking forward to the possibility of seeing a new first family occupying the White House.

The next election is scheduled for November 3, 2020 with the announcement of the results on December 14 of the same year. So far, almost twenty people have informed the public that they will be running for office, with the majority of them being members of the Democratic Party. Voters can expect to see a number of familiar faces as well, including President Donald Trump going for re-election, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Beto O’Rourke, who recently ran for Texas Senator.

According to President Donald Trump, “We need a president with tremendous intelligence, smarts, cunning, and strength.”

Although almost all of the candidates are politicians, there is one with a very different occupation. Marianne Williamson, 66, is a democratic candidate who is known as a spiritual advisor and teacher who has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, written many books, and starred in several movies. The issues that she hopes to tackle include education, the pro-choice campaign, and slavery. Ms. Williamson’s claim to fame is her advisory of Oprah and as an author, but overall she has very limited political experience.

“Our national challenges are deep, but our political conversation is shallow,” Ms. Williamson said. “My campaign is for people who want to dig deeper into the questions we face as a nation and deeper into finding the answers.”

Most of us remember Bernie Sanders being in the last election, and though he was unsuccessful, he is not giving up. This Independent candidate is a strong believer in pro-choice, preventing climate change, gun control, and “Medicare for All.” Although he had many supporters early on, some of those supporters are turning away due to allegations of sexism and harassment.

“Our campaign is about transforming our country,” Bernie Sanders said. “[We will create] a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice.”

Another prominent politician will be joining the race as well. 54 year old democrat Kamala Harris, announced her campaign January 19, 2019. A former prosecutor, she has been heavily scrutinized for several of her more questionable cases. She hopes to increase gun control, contribute to the pro-choice environment, and give a tax cut of up to $500 to working-class families.

“I feel very confident about my ability to listen and to work on behalf of the American public,” Mrs. Harris said. “The American public wants a fighter, and they want someone that is going to fight like heck for them and not fight based on self-interests. I’m prepared to do that.”

El Paso Native Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, 46, is another familiar face running for President. Formerly a member of the House, O’Rourke declined a re-election, instead opting to run for Senator of Texas. He was defeated by Ted Cruz by 2.6 points. If elected, O’Rourke hopes to legalize the use of recreational marijuana, reinstate “Medicare for All”, raise the minimum wage to $10.10, and prevent gender discrimination. Despite his recent clean image, stories of his younger years have surfaced, including his membership in a Hacktivist group (The Cult of the Dead Cow) and a twisted fantasy he had in his teen years. Voters will hopefully consider all sides and scenarios before making a choice of who they want representing our country.

“This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us,” O’Rourke said. “The challenges that we face right now—the interconnected crises in our economy, our democracy, and our climate have never been greater. And they will either consume us or they will afford us the greatest opportunity to unleash the genius of the United States of America.”

A face that has graced CNN, CNBC, The Verge, and The Week Magazine will soon be appearing in the election. Democrat Elizabeth Warren, 69, announced that she, too, will be participating in the race. Mrs. Warren plans to address climate change, gun control, and wants to shut down any idea of a border wall. She also has expressed a desire to raise taxes in order to “balance the federal spending budget.”

“Every person in America should be able to work hard, play by the same set of rules, and take care of themselves and the people they love,” said Ms. Warren. “That’s what I’m fighting for, and that’s why I’m launching an exploratory committee for president.”

Get ready for the 2020 elections: a time for new faces, new controversies, and new coverups. It may seem far off, but it’s on its way. While I’ve covered only six of the possible candidates, there are many more who also have a desire to “Make America Great Again.”
